Carnival Today, Shrive Tonight

Today is Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, when we eat up all the fat left over in the refrigerator.  It is also Carnival when we eat up all the meat in the refrigerator.

But more importantly, it is Shrove Tuesday.  The word “shrove” comes from the ancient Roman wrestling word, “to shrive.”  Men would wrestle in sand pits.  Afterwards, they would take pottery shards and clean themselves off by shriving the oil and sand off their skin.

After Mardi Gras and Carnival, tonight we shrive.  We begin the time to scrap off our sins in Holy Lent through penance because according to Jesus the first shall be last, and the last shall be first.

  1. “because according to Jesus the first shall be last, and the last shall be first.”
That is true and that is why during the petition prayers at Mass we should pray for all children, born and unborn, FIRST and the Holy Father, last
