Familiarity Breeds Contempt

“He came to Nazareth where he had grown up…” St. Luke tells us about Jesus.  How great it is to go home and have familiar faces welcome us.  But this time when Jesus goes home things go terribly wrong.  After his baptism at the Jordan, Jesus tells his townsfolk in the synagogue that the verse of Isaiah announcing the “Anointed Bearer of Glad Tidings” is really him.  Do you think that his neighbors rejoiced at the news?  On the contrary, they tried to kill him.

Even with Jesus, familiarity can breed contempt.
