The task of every Christian man and woman is to get everyone to heaven.
After the monks of St. Procopius Abbey elected Abbot Austin, we began a practice to end every meeting of the community with the abbot saying, “May Christ…” with the monks completing the sentence “…bring us all together to eternal life.” RB 72:12
On the patronal feast of our Holy Father Benedict, we learn that it is the task of every Christian to lead the world to eternal life. That is why Jesus tells the Apostles not to carry extra burdens as they evangelize. Working with the Lord to get ourselves and others to heaven is a lot of work.
Paraphrasing the words of Joseph, son Jacob, It is really for the sake of saving lives that God sends us into the world as Benedictines.
Happy feast day!
